Wood and veneer furniture may have slight differences in their appearance and texture, but their care instructions are similar. Maintaining your wood furniture pieces is simple, but a little care can go a long way in ensuring the longevity of your pieces.

Cleaning

  • Dust using a soft cloth. Dust and dirt particles can destroy the natural sheen.
  • Clean surfaces with a damp cloth and some mild dish soap. Rinse with clean water on a damp cloth and wipe off using a soft dry cloth.

  • Wipe up spills promptly to avoid surface damage by leaving the stains on too long.
  • For minor surface scratches, you can use white vinegar and olive oil by mixing equal parts into a cup (you will not need large quantities). Let the mixture sit for an hour before applying, then with a soft cloth apply and rub gently until the scratch is gone. Always test on an inconspicuous area and rub in the direction of the grain.
  • For deep scratches, gouges, and dents it is recommended to take it to a qualified woodworker.

Best Practices

  • Only use indoors, unless specifically designed for outdoor use.
  • Always use coasters underneath hot or wet objects to protect the surface.
  • Maintain consistent humidity levels to avoid expansion and contraction of wood.
  • While not necessary, you may use wax or polish on wood furniture to minimize surface scratches. Wax offers a durable and hard finish compared to polish. Apply wax carefully to avoid streaks and a cloudy appearance. If unsure how to do this, seek guidance from a professional or a reliable guide.

  • Avoid exposure to the elements.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and heat sources as the heat and light can affect the material’s longevity.
  • Don’t use all purpose cleaners. They contain chemicals that can be harsh for wood. Cleaning with a wet cloth and some mild dish soap work well.
  • Avoid using oil or any polish containing oil on painted wood surfaces.
  • Do not store polish remover, alcohol, or abrasive solutions near or on furniture.
